New notes: Have people made enough money it cannot fit into their pockets? – Pratt

Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight, has said it is pointless for the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to have introduced the new GHS100 and GHS200 notes if Ghana is soon going to use the Eco currency.

Speaking at a public forum on the ‘New Voters Register’, in Accra on Thursday, 9 January 2020, Mr Pratt said: “In this country many incredible things happen. Only a couple of weeks ago, all of us heard that we are going to introduce a new denomination to our currency and everybody was wondering why. Why new denominations?

“Have some people made so much money that it doesn’t fit into their pockets that they want to create new denominations which will be easier for them to carry?

“A few weeks after, we are now announcing that we are not even going to use the cedi anymore and that we are going to use something called Eco.

“If you are going to use Eco what is the sense in printing more currency that you are going to throw it away? It is that same logic which is feeding into the nonsensical claim for a new voter’s register.

Ghana has agreed to join eight West African countries who have adopted the ECO as legal tender.

They are Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
