New electricity tariffs won’t improve load shedding – PURC

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has stated that the current nationwide load shedding exercise will not improve despite the newly announced tariffs for electricity.

“The load shedding is a matter of inadequate generation,” said Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah, PURC’s Director of Public Relations and External Affairs.

She was speaking to TV3’s Sandra Amarquaye on Tuesday, September 30 over the Automatic Adjustment Formula for the utility tariffs for the last quarter of the year.

Sanction

The Commission increased electricity tariffs by 6.54 per cent while water tariffs were increased by 4.54 per cent.

There was, however, stay of execution with regard to the water tariffs.

“It is a sanction,” stated Nana Yaa Jantuah.

She stressed that the electricity tariffs will be applied as the situation was going to worsen if there was no increase.

The next tariff adjustment will be at the end of December, 2014.
