New Accra Abattoir Commissioned

Accra (Greater Accra) 18 May, '98

Mr. Joshua Alabi Greater Accra Regional Minister, today commissioned a 14 billion-cedi ultra-modern abattoir that will replace the old slaughter house located in James Town. Accra Abattoir Company sited off the Spintex Road is a partnership between the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the Ghana Butchers Association and Masai Developers, suppliers and development consultants.

The company, whose managing director is Mr Edward Annan, has the capacity of slaughtering 400 cattle per day. The Canadian government, through the Canadian International Development Agncy (CIDA), provided 4.2 million Canadian dollars, about 5.4 billion cedis, in grant for the establishment of the company which has about 90 employees. It has two production lines, one for slaughtering cattle, sheep and goats, and the other for pigs to meet religious and cultural concerns. Muslims do not want to have anything to do with pigs. gri
