National Best Fisherman loses vessel

Mumford (C/R), Mar 3, GNA - Disaster struck last Sunday when a vessel belonging to the 2003 National Best Fisherman, Mr Kow Kotu, sunk at the coast of Apam.

The vessel estimated at over 350 million cedis broke from its anchor off-shore Mumford in the Central Region during a storm and drifted hitting a rock at Apam destroying the wooden frame.

Volunteers, however, managed to retrieve the engine and fishing nets, which were partly damaged.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency at Mumford, Mr Kotu said the accident was the second to befall him in three years and appealed to the government to construct a break water in the area to ensure safe anchorage.

According to Mr Kotu, about three or four vessels got destroyed every year at Mumford due to the rocky nature of the shore. "We can not stay in our town to do fishing all year round for the fear of windstorms, which can destroy the vessels," he said and appealed for assistance to rebuild the vessel.
