National Ambulance Service crew survives dawn gun attack

Two emergency medical technicians with the National Ambulance Service of Ghana narrowly escaped injury after the ambulance they were travelling in came under gunfire in the early hours of Monday, 2 March 2026.

According to information released by the service, SEMT Anthony Donkor and EMT Alexander Adu Blowing were returning from Tamale Teaching Hospital after handing over a critical patient when the incident occurred.

The crew, operating Ambulance GV-657-20 from the Kpassa station, was approaching the first security barrier in Yendi at about 3:12 AM when unknown assailants reportedly opened fire on the vehicle.

The attack shattered the ambulance’s windscreen and damaged both front tyres, putting the vehicle under immediate threat while the crew was still inside.

Despite the sudden assault, SEMT Donkor managed to maintain control of the situation. Under fire, he reportedly engaged the vehicle’s reverse gear and executed a rapid retreat, steering the damaged ambulance for about half a kilometre to the safety of the Ghana Police Service checkpoint in Yendi.

Both EMTs escaped the attack without physical injuries.

The ambulance, however, sustained significant damage, including a collapsed windscreen and two deflated front tyres.

Authorities say a full inspection will be conducted to determine whether the vehicle suffered additional ballistic damage.

The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by emergency medical personnel, who often operate in challenging conditions while responding to medical emergencies.

Officials praised the Kpassa-based crew for their composure and quick thinking, describing their actions as a demonstration of courage and professionalism under life-threatening circumstances.
