Nation Must Promote Use of Internet

The Chief Operation Officer of Ghana and Uganda Intercommunication Data Network (IDN), Mr. Francis Quartey says Ghana must consider the accelerated use of the Internet technology in order to propel the nation to a path of accelerated growth.

When that happens, he said, the country would become more productive and opt out of the Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) group in about six years time.He was speaking at the International Telecommunication Uion (ITU) forum organised by the National Communication Authority (NCA) in Accra.

The forum has the theme: "The Internet, Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects."

He said, it is not the producing of cocoa alone that, could change the economic status of the country. The communications expert therefore appealed to the government to make networking communication systems popular and available in the country and accessible to every school not limiting it to tertiary level

The Internet, he said, could help us achieve all our goals only if policy makers in the country set the agenda. Mr. Quartey said to restore our culture, which is fading fast due to the reaction of the enthusiastic youth to foreign culture in the media, the Internet should have more input based on Ghanaian culture.
