A routine house-to-house campaign at the Manhyia Constituency by the Member of Parliament (MP) of the area, Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempey, popularly called Napo and his supporters, turned bloody yesterday when two suspected NDC hoodlums appeared at the scene and started shooting indiscriminately.
Led by one Mafius, believed to be an ex-convict, and his nephew whose name was not immediately known, the trigger-happy gangsters, who were wielding pistols, fired several gunshots which sent most of the fear-stricken NPP fans running helter-skelter.
The attack took place a few miles away from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) where the recent peace accord was signed by political leaders.
In an unprovoked attack, the NDC goons reached for the guns and started firing at Napo who missed by a whisker.
Minutes after scattering the NPP supporters, some brave members of the party regrouped and confronted their attackers in brutal fashion.
Mafius was caught by the angry-looking NPP supporters who nearly lynched him. A woman at the scene reportedly intervened to stop the charged NPP supporters from further administering justice to the errant NDC hoodlum.
Mafiu’s companion, who sensed danger, reportedly managed to escape from the scene, thereby preventing the angry-looking NPP fans from laying their hands on him.
Dr Opoku-Prempeh was in a shop wooing people to vote for the NPP when the hoodlums attacked.
Napo said the incident happened at an intersection near the Subin Valley around 6pm when he and his supporters were moving from shop to shop campaigning.
According to him, he entered a shop in the area to interact with the shop owner and minutes later, he saw a big car approaching after which he heard gunshots being fired indiscriminately.
Not knowing what to do, the Menhyia MP was admonished by the shop owners to stay in the shop to avert being hurt by the trigger-happy gangsters that had by then taken control of the hitherto peaceful area.
The NPP MP said he would lodge official complaint with the Ashanti regional police command this morning.
The paper learnt that Mafius, who is in a critical condition, has been sent to the hospital but his companion is still at large.
Daily Guide learnt that the police, after getting wind of the scary incident, appeared at the scene in large numbers to ensure law and order, especially in Ash Town.
