Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has congratulated Uhuru Kenyatta following his landslide victory in the Kenyan presidential elections. Incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta, successfully secured a second term in office after garnering 54.27% of the total vote cast, with opposition leader Raila Odinga only managing 44.74%.

Despite a tense atmosphere during the elections, international observers described the whole process as “transparent” and “fair” after Kenyatta was declared winner by the Electoral Commission.

The manner in which both Kenyatta and Odinga conducted themselves during and after the election period has impressed Ghana president, Nana Akufo-Addo, who has congratulated both men for their roles in having a peaceful Kenyan elections. In a Facebook post, president Akufo-Addo wrote: “This is to extend my warm congratulations to President Uhuru Kenyatta, on his hard-fought victory and emphatic re-election in the Kenyan presidential election of August 8, 2017.

“His main contender, former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, is also to be commended for the peaceful manner in which he conducted his campaign, and for indicating his decision to seek redress in Kenya’s Supreme Court over the results of the election.”

He added that despite the Odinga challenging result of the election in court, he is confident the rule of law, and more importantly the choice of the Kenyan people, will prevail.

“The Kenyan people, by this vote, have moved to strengthen the frontiers of their democracy, and it is my hope that, regardless of the decision taken by Kenya’s Supreme Court, the delivery of progress and prosperity to the Kenyan people will continue in a process of national reconciliation and in conditions of freedom and the rule of law to the benefit of the welfare and stability of the Kenyan nation,” he said.
