The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) has confirmed the shooting incident at the Adventist Senior High School that has caused a serious eye injury to a female student.

They announced the confirmation after the authority undertook an initial investigative inspection into the firearm incident that occurred at Adventist Senior High School at Bantama, on Friday, April 4, 2025.

In a statement from the Public Relations Unit of NaSIA, it said a 16-year-old male second-year student was reported to have brought a locally manufactured pistol to school and accidentally discharged it during break time, resulting in a serious eye injury to a female classmate.

The school’s administration swiftly administered first aid at the infirmary, transferred the victim to the Kwadaso SDA Hospital, and later to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further medical treatment, it added.

According to the statement, the police were immediately contacted, and the perpetrator was taken into custody by the Suame District Police, and was arraigned before the Akropong Juvenile Court on April 7, 2025.

NaSIA noted that the unfortunate incidents communicate the pressing need for stricter security and disciplinary measures in schools, whilst the authority remains committed to safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff across pre-tertiary institutions in the country.

The authority said it will make regular monitoring visits to ensure the recommendations are adhered to, with a call on all relevant stakeholders to prioritise students' welfare through collaborative actions, and to report any suspicious activities or procedures carried out by schools to the authority.

Below are the key findings of NaSIA’s investigation into the case:

1. The firearm belonged to the student’s father.

2. The incident occurred in the classroom during break hours and was not preceded by any known conflict.

3. Insufficient security staff-to-student ratio and gaps in access control and external encroachment were noted.

4. The school, in collaboration with its guidance and counselling unit, conducted a trauma-support session for students following the incident.
