NY City Council Hosts Ghana 53

*Bronx, NY --Ghanaians in New York made history as they celebrated Ghana's 53rd Independence with style and culture. This was a result of the New York City Council with Council Member; Helen Diane Foster of the 16th District in the Bronx hosting a cross section of Ghanaians in a colorful celebration at City Hall on Thursday; March 4, 2010.
*The Council Member Helen Foster expressed gratitude to the Ghanaian community at large and noted that the event was organized as an appreciation for the communities' support of her initiatives and to urge the Ghanaians to actively get involve in their respective communities. *
The celebration brought together many dignitaries, including Ambassador Leslie Kojo Christian, Ghana's Ambassador to the UN and the Mission Staff; National Council of Ghanaian Associations (NCOGA) executives and its Board of Directors, Dr. Twum Boafo, a renowned gynecologist, Nana Anane Amponsah, New York Asantefuohene, Nana Abena Manu, NY Asantefuohemaa and Togbe Ledlum, of United Volta Association. The crowd was entertained by Nana Amponsah Cultural troupe with their "Adowa" dancers.
Ms. Rose Ivy Quarshie, the Executive Secretary General of NCOGA, welcomed the gathering and noted that the community at large is pleased with the gesture by City Hall with Council Member Diane Foster for hosting the Ghana @53 reception at City Hall. She then invited the audience to the upcoming Recognition and Awards night the following day; on March 6th at the Armenia Hall on at 630 Second Avenue.
In his keynote message, His Excellency, Leslie Christian thanked the City Council for the honor and recalled the significant contributions of the Big Six and the heroic role the first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his comrades of the Convention People's Party (CPP) as well as the many unsung heroes in the struggle for independence. He further stated that President Mills has assured Ghanaians that his government will account for every pesewa and has in this regard established an independent authority to manage Ghana's oil revenue.
Highlights of the evening was the advise by Rev. Foster who urged Ghanaians to get involve in political process and threw a challenge to the audience that he would like to see a Ghanaian run for a City Council member very soon. Representatives from the other African Countries were on hand to grace the occasion. Two proclamations were presented to Ambassador Christian and the NCOGA.
Various press houses were also present for the celebration.
