NUGS urges students to desist from electoral malpractices

Accra, Jan. 4, GNA - Mr Anthony Abotsi Afriyie, President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), has warned students against involvement in any form of electoral malpractice during the ongoing District Assembly and Unit Committee elections.

"Students are strongly advised against any form of electoral malpractice during the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections, such as double voting, impersonation or violence," he said.

In a statement issued to Ghana News Agency, Mr Afriyie said it was the duty of students to help entrench democracy and encourage the concept of decentralization to promote accountability in policy implementation to enhance national development.

He said it was the expectation of NUGS that 2011 being a "Year of Action" as declared by President John Evans Atta Mills, would see tremendous gains in the nation's education sector and the lives of students. Mr Afriyie wished all student candidates in the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections the best of luck.

He expressed the hope that the best candidates would win to help deepen the decentralization of the governance system.
