NUGS Demonstrate Against Conditions In Universities

The leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students NUGS on Monday, led a group of students from some Universities in the country to demonstrate against what they describe as inconsistencies" in the disbursement of students loan as well as other problems confronting the University. The NUGS President, Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, who was among the group, led the team to the Ministry of Education where they presented their petition to an official of the Ministry.

The petition also referred to the high student-bed ratio on the various campuses saying that Hall authorities are capitalising on the situation and hiring beds to foreign students in hard currencies. It also criticised the shift system being run by some faculties, where students of the same level and course attend the same lecture at different times.

The students therefore called on government to address these issues and also improve the conditions of lecturers and workers at the universities to curb the problem of brain drain. The Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. Rashid Bawa who received the petition assured the student leaders that the ministry, upon careful study of the petitions would act accordingly and make the appropriate recommendations.
