NRC Chairman Under Attack

The chairman of the National Reconciliation Commission, Justice Amua-Sekyi has come in for criticisms over his sharp tone against witnesses who testify before the commission. Some observers say the Justice Amua-sekyi?s posture does not reflect the objectives of the commission, which is to assist in efforts to reconcile the nation.

The Commissioner in the last two days has engaged in arguments with Capt Kojo Tsika and his counsel over Obed Asamoah over procedures at the NRC. The chairman has in the past been also accused of being impatient with those who have appeared before him.

But, the associate director of the Center for Democratic Development, Dr. Baafour Agyeman-Duah believes some of the criticisms are unfair to the chairman. Commenting on the issue in an interview with Joy News Dr. Agyeman-Duah said Justice Amua-Sekyi has demonstrated that he is both firm and fair in his handling of issues at the commission.

?I think he has done a fair and firm job. It is not an easy job. There are certain rules and procedures so why should people think that the rules be bent because another citizen is appearing before the commission regardless of how special their case might be.?

Tsikata?s appearance at the NRC attracted the largest audience to the commission?s premises. The ex-national security advisor was hailed by a large crowd singing and dancing as he made his way out.

Newspapers headlines on Wednesday suggested Tsikata had done a decent job at the commission. The influential Ghanaian Chronicle said: ?Kojo T Steals Show At NRC?, The National Heritage newspaper captioned its story: Tsikata Throws bombshell? whiles the Statesman with a sarcastic tone wrote: ?Kojo Tsikata, The Victim!?

But Dr Agyeman Duah said reaction to Tsikata?s appearance was wrong. ?Its wrong for people to claim victory because everyone who speaks at the NRC tells the truth from their own angle and view point.
