The former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would have still taken disciplinary action against its 2024 parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, even if she had won the rerun.
Addressing criticisms from sections of the public regarding Nana Akua Afriyie’s apology for defying the party’s directive, Nana Akomea stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is guided by principles that inform both its actions and those of its members.
“Principle is principle. People were asking about what the party would have done if Nana Akua Afriyie had won. We would have still punished her if she had won because that is our principle,” he said while speaking on Peace FM on July 15, 2025.
He explained that sanctioning the individual—even if she had won the election—would have been a step in the right direction.
He argued that doing so would help prevent setting a bad precedent within the party and discourage members from defying its directives and decisions.
“There is a need for discipline in a big party like ours because this could set a bad precedent for another person who may want to flout the party’s directive by saying nothing was done to Akua Afriyie.
“The records must show that whether she won or not, she has disrespected the party, and the party equally must act accordingly. She has accepted her faults, apologised to the party, and has been forgiven,” he added.
Nana Akua Afriyie rendered an apology to the party's National Council for disobeying its directive to abstain from the recent parliamentary rerun in 19 polling centres, where she narrowly lost to Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Aubynn secured 34,090 votes against Afriyie’s 33,881, marking a historic victory for the NDC in the constituency.
