The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced its intention to lodge a formal complaint with the Ghana Police Service following alleged death threats and a physical assault during the Akwatia Constituency by-election on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the NPP condemned the actions of the National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chief Sofo Azorka, and the NDC’s Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer, Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, for their alleged roles in the incidents.

The NPP’s statement, signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, specifically highlighted threats of death allegedly made by Azorka and Amadu against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and Majority Chief Whip Frank Annor Dompreh.

The party also condemned an alleged unprovoked physical attack on its Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, by Azorka and his escorts during a scuffle at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area.

Sofo Azorka should have been arrested by the police – Nana Boakye

“The New Patriotic Party condemns the threats of death against the Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin; the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; and Hon. Frank Annor Dompreh by the 1st National Vice Chairman of the NDC, Chief Sofo Azorka, and Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, the Abuakwa North Constituency communication officer of the NDC.

“The Party further condemns the unprovoked physical attack of its 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, by Chief Sofo Azorka and his notorious hoodlums. Such violent conduct by no mean a person than a National Officer of the ruling party and a constituency officer diminishes the gains of our democracy and has the potential to create further insecurity in the country in the face of Ghana’s recent decline in the Global Peace Index Ranking,” the statement said.

The party has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately arrest and investigate Azorka, Amadu, and others, noting that it will formally lodge a complaint over the matter.

“The Party will formally lodge complaints with the Ghana Police Service against the mentioned individuals. We are also calling on the Inspector General of Police, as part of his post-election actions, to immediately arrest and investigate Chief Sofo Azorka, Alhaji Abdul Wahab, and any other person captured in the videos widely circulated in the media,” the party said.

The Akwatia by-election, necessitated by the death of NPP Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi in July, was marked by heightened tensions between the NPP and NDC.

The election, which saw 52,328 registered voters across 119 polling stations, was won by the NDC’s candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who secured 18,199 votes against the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu’s 15,235 votes.
