NPP thuggery: Show leadership! – Ashanti Region Peace Council to Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo must 'show leadership' and bring the thugs in the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to order, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Peace Council, Professor Seth Opuni Asiamah, has admonished.

“It is time those in authority, particularly I will say the president, ought to show leadership, to let his own people know that it is not the way he wants to run his government,” Prof Opuni Asiamah said while condemning a recent attack on the Regional Security Coordinator George Agyei by pro-NPP vigilante group Delta Force.

Apart from urging the president to show leadership on the matter, Prof Opuni Asiamah also condemned some leaders of the NPP for egging on the thuggery, saying it “leaves much to be desired”.

Meanwhile the Council in the region is calling on the police to prosecute persons behind Friday's attack on the regional security coordinator.

George Agyei, who has been appointed by the President to coordinate security in the region, was manhandled by macho men belonging to the pro-NPP group.

According to members of the group, they cannot work with Mr Agyei since he is not a native of the region.

Some groups, including supporters of the NPP, have condemned the actions, while the leader of the Delta Force was arrested by police on Saturday.

Prof Opuni Asiamah described the incident as unfortunate and shameful.

He has urged the police to go beyond arrests and prosecute the culprits.

“…I believe the President and IGP are up to the task. This morning we heard two have been arrested; we want to see prosecution. We have seen arrests done many times in the past,” Prof Asiamah told Class FM's Ashanti regional correspondent Hafiz Tijani, in an exclusive interview on Monday, March 27.

He was of the view that prosecution of the culprits would serve as deterrent to others.
