The Director of Communications for the 2024 Campaign of the New Patriotic Party, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has stated that the party’s uproar over the suspension of Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, is in the interest of defending democracy.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Miracles Aboagye refuted the assertion that the NPP has waged a spirited defense of the under-fire Chief Justice, suggesting a personal or political interest in her case.

“To be very honest, no NPP person is defending Chief Justice Torkornoo. What we are defending is democracy; that is what we are defending. How does it concern us if the Chief Justice is sacked? It is rather the intent, not the processes,” he stated.

President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo with immediate effect on April 22, 2025, following three petitions filed against her, alleging misconduct.

Amid criticisms of the president’s decision, members of the government have justified the suspension of the Chief Justice by citing the powers of the president granted under the constitution and the dictates of the law.

However, according to Dennis Aboagye, the president’s action cannot be deemed appropriate by the mere permissibility of the law.

“What is funny is that they reference former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Superior Court judges to argue that he had the right to make the decision, but it also had to be suitable. He (President Mahama) also has the right to remove the Chief Justice. You can cook it up or find several ways to remove her, but the question is: is it suitable? What John Mahama and the NDC are doing now — they have forever destroyed our judiciary,” he said.

Following the establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice by the president, in consultation with the Council of State, and her subsequent suspension, a five-member committee has been set up to investigate the allegations, with Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie appointed as Acting Chief Justice during the probe.
