New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has disclosed that the party leadership has imposed a GH¢4,000,000 development levy on each candidate contesting the January 31, 2026, presidential primary.
Addressing party executives during his ongoing nationwide campaign, the former Member of Parliament described the levy as disgraceful.
“Party welfare is important to me. We need to build this party. Can you believe that the five contestants are being charged a development fee of GH¢4 million each because the party doesn’t have a penny?” he said.
According to Agyapong, the levy, which is in addition to a GH¢600,000 nomination and filing fee, initially seemed like a joke.

“I picked my form for GH¢100,000 and filed with another fee of GH¢500,000. I thought they were joking, so I didn’t take it seriously. But one young man whispered to me, asking if I brought the four million. I asked, ‘What four million?’ Three days ago, they gave me a deadline that September 5 is the deadline to pay my four million. So, I had to give them GH¢4 million. Filing and contesting as a flagbearer now costs GH¢4.6 million,” he revealed.
He attributed the situation to the party’s failure to empower its members and ensure their welfare.

“If we had awarded contracts to our contractors, would we watch NDC members share money while we are unable to match them?” he stated, citing the recent Akwatia by-election.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) opened nominations for its 2026 presidential flagbearer contest on July 29, 2025, with the nomination window closing on August 28, 2025.
At the close of the filing process, five individuals — former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, successfully filed their nominations.
Meanwhile, Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former flagbearer contestant, announced his withdrawal from the contest in a press release dated August 27, 2025, citing concerns over inappropriate timing, internal bias, and the unhealthy monetisation of the process.
Aside the GH¢100k nomination fees and GH¢500k filing fees, the NPP has also charged flagbearer candidates GH¢4 Million as party development fees.
