NPP Will Develop Volta Region - VP

The Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama has assured the people of Volta Region that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will develop the region and asked them to allay their fears.

This was contained in a speech read for him by the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Kwasi Owusu-Yeboa at the 47th Annual Mepe festival at Mepe in the North Tongu District. The festival coincides with the Avazorli Festival, which is celebrated by the chiefs and people of four traditional areas, namely Ziave, Todome, Botoku, Kpando, Mepe, Anyigbe and Kpedze.

The Vice President said the Volta Region would have its fair share of the 'national cake'. He said the government was studying the uncompleted projects of the previous government and would repackage them and plan new ones for implementation in the region.

"I wish to assure the entire citizenry of the Volta Region that all projects initiated by the previous government will be completed together with new ones to help improve the quality of life of the people whose well-being is our primary concern.

"We shall work to allay any fears that some people of the Volta Region might have and to assure them that their fortunes can best be turned around under the NPP," he said and called on the people of the region to cooperate with the government to achieve its targets.

Torgbui Kwao Anipati IV Fiaga of Mepe Traditional Area appealed to the government to see the Volta Region as a special region despite the fact that it is a stronghold of the NDC.

He explained that there is the tendency for politicians to consider those who vote against them as enemies adding that the situation could turn round if the NPP would see the region as a priority for development.

The Volta Region, since Election 2000, has been apprehensive about the commitment of the NPP towards developing the region. A number of prominent chiefs and opinion leaders have admitted that the region did not receive much attention from the previous government although it played the role of the 'World Bank' by massively supporting the NDC.

The electoral defeat of NDC quarantined power brokers in the region and the chiefs have been sending distress calls to the NPP.

Analysts say the only way that the NPP will win the heart of the people in the Volta Region is to take concrete steps to improve the infrastructure and initiate projects in the region.
