NPP Fails In Uplifting Democracy In Ghana

The NDC Member of Parliament for Gomua West, Mrs. Ama Banua Doe has expressed regret about the inability of the ruling NPP to put in place instruments in helping to sustain the nation's democracy won through hard work, commitment and dedication of NDC government but rather engaging in matters likely to weaken the basic structures of the nation's democracy.

She observed that there has been fast deterioration in democracy within the two-and-half year rule of the NPP. This according to her is manifested basically in the way the ruling party has unduly used it incumbency to manipulated six parliamentary bye elections in its favour.

The Member of Parliament noted that it was the hope of the NDC when leaving power that the NPP claiming to be real democrats will see to the growth of the nurtured democracy in Ghana to the benefit of the citizenry but the hopes have been shattered as the NPP party is rather seen in just basking in its old and non-functional slogan of democracy.

Speaking on Ghanaian radio station programme in London, the Rabbi Show , Mrs Banua Doe alleged that several incidences of intimidation, bribery and in some cases violence behaviours characterised the parliamentary bye elections thus rendering them undemocratic. She debunked the notion that divisions in the party are the causes of the lost of the elections but said the incumbent has not provided a fair and level grounds for free and fair elections.

Rabbi Show is a news and current affairs programme on WBLS 102.8 FM hosted by Nana Obeng Badu.

She expressed disappointment that constituents were not given the freedom they needed to expressed their democratic rights. According to her, the ruling party used some unfair tactics to persuade some traditional rulers to convince their subjects in voting for the NPP, adding that such moves by the NPP are just to put some kind of fear in the members of the NDC and also try to justify its claims that the NDC party is in shambles.

She questioned the NPP's integrity and credibility saying why should the ruling party start delivering electricity poles and transformers to pooling areas on the eve of an election and elections day. She sited an instance at a community called Akwamu in the Gomua East constituency during the recent parliamentary bye elections where electorates in queues to vote were called upon to help unload transformers and electric poles. She conceded to the fact that the people in the area are in need of electricity which the NDC started for them, but the NNP was capitalising on that to win the elections . This she said was a very foul means to influence the electorates to vote for the NPP.

In an answer to question, the MP who has won parliamentary elections on three occasions argued that the fact that NDC engaged itself in such practises does not mean the NPP should do the same if they want the country to move forward. She said the there will be no justification in voting for the NPP if it continues to repeat the very mistakes the NDC committed. Mrs Banua Doe said these were the very issues the NPP raised when it was in the opposition and even used against the NDC in their electioneering campaigns.

In another instance, she noted, but for the timely intervention of the chief of a town she was as a pooling agents, she herself was nearly manhandled by a group of angry youth believed to be members of the NPP ,for challenging the authenticity of a prospective voter.

She appealed to all Ghanaians to help address the issues to bring sanity in the nation's electioneering system to ensure matured, fair as well as high standard democratic structure in Ghana.
