NPP Chairman Heads EC Security

It has now come to light that the new Chief of Security at the Electoral Commission, Major Samuel Kofi Ayim, is not only a card-bearing member, but Chairman of the Lashibi branch, Tema Community 18, 19 and 20) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The over-aged Major Ayim, said to be an “aggrieved person”, was brought in to replace the former Security Officer, as part of what is suspected to be a grand design for the NPP to control affairs at the Commission.

Ironically, two key members of the Commission are being asked to leave the outfit, on grounds of old age, obviously to make way for the appointment of known party officials.

Already, orders have also been sent out for the NPP to form registration squads, who will be ‘recommended’ for engagement as field officers in the impending registration of voters’ exercise.

Although, the membership of a party needs not be a barrier for the employment of any citizen in the EC, the background of Major Ayim and his utterances have raised concerns even among his colleagues.

For Major Ayim, it is said, was once detained and questioned about an attempted coup in the country and he now claims that he was also pre-maturely retired from the Armed Forces, during the NDC era.

So incensed is he over the matter that he is reported to have told a party gathering, that if he could have a way, the NDC won’t get a single vote, anywhere, in the country.

It is not known, whether the Authorities at the EC were aware of the man’s background before offering that sensitive position in that outfit.

But, what observers strongly believe is that the “aggrieved” former Army Officer, had been pushed into that outfit to serve some kind of interest, if the opportunity falls his way.

Meanwhile, attempts to “link up” with the EC, to help untie the knotty issue, proved futile.
