NHIS growing faster than Ghana’s economy – NHIA

Communications Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Selorm Adonoo says the nation’s biggest social intervention programme, the National Health Insurance Scheme, is growing faster than the Ghana’s economy.

He has, therefore, made a case for the increment in subscription levies of the Scheme.

Speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Tuesday, October 28, Mr Adonoo said the Scheme has grown from 1.2 million subscribers to over 5 million subscribers within a short period.

As a result, the tax element must increase, he suggested.

He said stakeholders recently met to find possible ways of generating funds for the Scheme as about 70 per cent of current subscribers do not pay premium, a situation that is adversely affecting the efficient running of the Scheme, he says.

He said stakeholders, for instance, suggested the allocation of about 25 per cent of the ‘Talk tax’ to the Scheme.
