NHIS Postponed To August

The National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS) billed to have taken off in June has now been shifted to August this year.

This is the second time the implementation process has been postponed since the scheme which is expected to replace the cash and carry system was launched in March last year.

According to Dr. Sam Akor, head of the NHIS secretariat, the postponement has become necessary because some districts have yet to finalize preparations including the collection of premiums.

But he says some 100 out of the 123 national schemes would be operational in July this year.

He said when fully operational the scheme would benefit those who have honored their minimum contributions.

But exemption will be made for persons are who are determined to be genuinely unable to pay.
