NGO celebrates Global Dignity Day with Kayayei

Other Stakeholders, a social enterprise development organisation, has donated insecticide treated mosquito nets, bale of children’s clothing, and electric solar lanterns, to the head porters (Kayayei) communities at the Madina Market of Accra.

The donation forms part of this year’s Global Dignity Day (GDD) Accra celebrations to support Kayayei in the bustling Madina Market of Accra.

Ms Nadia Zeine, CEO of Other Stakeholders told the Ghana News Agency that the celebration featured a health talk on child nutrition and care of babies relevant to the circumstances of the head porters.

She said other issues discussed are malaria prevention, sexual and reproductive health with more than 200 Kayayei, pregnant and children getting medical attention at Madina Polyclinic.

She said as a long-term measure to ensure good health for the children of these Kayayei, management seeks to register them on the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The Day, marked on a chosen day in October every year, was used to educate and inspire young people and to help them appreciate and understand their self-worth and goals in life in a dignified way.

It was also to help youth and adults to become their best self and to assistance others in a meaningful way.

The Day is the brainchild of three friends, concerned global citizens who met as Young Global Leaders at the World Economic Forum.

Many of the Kayayei’s were excited with the gifts and could not hide their joy as they receive the items.
