NEQ 2019: Larteh SHS, Aburi SHSTS, Adeiso Presby, Asamankese SHS ease into quarterfinals

Four more schools have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Nana Sir Ofori-Atta I National Energy Quiz 2019 after outclassing various opponents in tough duels at the preliminary stages.

Larteh SHS, Aburi SHSTS, Adeiso Presby and Asamankese SHS moved a step closer towards the apex with wins enough to secure them quantifications into the quarter-finals and ultimately towards annexing their first title.

Adeiso Presby and Asamankese SHS in the Asamankese zone amassed 19 and 16 points respectively in the preliminary encounter held at the Asamankese SHS on Monday.

The two made mincemeat of their contenders, Presby SHS, Nsawam SHS, St. Thomas SHS, Asuo SHS, Kwaboa Nyanoa SHS and Kade SHSTS to progress.

The two garnered just what was required to secure their qualifications.
They await the winners of the other preliminary rounds to be held in the coming days to be contested in four remaining zones including Oda, Kwahu, Kibi and Juaben and the winners of the contests will proceed to the quarter-finals.

Earlier on Friday, Larteh SHS and Aburi SHSTS also booked their quarter-final slots from the Akuapem zone of the competition after causing a big upset by easing their way past favourites, Methodist girls SHS and three other schools from the Akuapim zone, Okuapeman SHS, Benkum SHS, and Mount Sinai SHS.

Hosts MEGHIS though provided an intimidating atmosphere failed to make their recent laurels count this time.

Larteh SHS and Aburi SHSTS secured 39 points apiece ahead of 3rd placed Benkum SHS with 36 points.

These latest qualifications bring to six the number of schools who have made it to the next stage of the competition including.

Larteh SHS, Aburi SHSTS, Adeiso Presby and Asamankese SHS now join Yilo Krobo SHS and Anum Presby SHS who qualified from the Somanya zone while they await the winners of the other preliminary contests.

More preliminary rounds will be held in the coming days to determine which other schools will join the already qualified schools.

More than 90 schools across Ghana are competing in this year’s Nana Sir Ofori-Atta I National Energy Quiz trophy with participating schools increased from five in the first edition in 2018 to the current number.

The competition which is designed to empower Senior High and Technical Schools with knowledge in the entire energy value chain including petroleum upstream and downstream, power generation, transmission and distribution, will focus on Power, Petroleum and Culture.

It equally aims at educating the youth in both Senior High Schools (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) on the energy sector.

The NEQ is sponsored by the Ghana Oil Company Limited, Ghana Grid Company Limited, The Energy Commission, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana National Gas Company Limited and the Petroleum Commission.

The annual competition which is run under the auspices of Nananom of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, is jointly organized by Eastern Star Awards Co. Limited in partnership with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and coordinated in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Energy.
