NDC to Promote Welfare of teachers

Kumasi, March 6, GNA - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) would work hard to better the conditions of service of teachers if given the mandate in the 2008 elections, Professor Evans Atta Mills, presidential candidate of the Party, has assured.

Addressing a mammoth rally of the Party in Kumasi on Wednesday, he enumerated the crucial role teachers played in the educational and human resource development of the country, saying in spite of this it was unfortunate that the present government has failed to motivate them. Prof Mills reassured that the NDC would create a congenial atmosphere to allow a substantial number of teachers to upgrade their skills and knowledge on regular basis to ensure efficiency in their work.

The NDC, he said, viewed education in general as the pivot around which the nation's socio-economic and political growth revolved, and that the Party was committed to developing all sectors in collaboration with all stakeholders.

The NDC flagbearer took a swipe at the government for failing to deliver on its campaign promises, especially in the creation of employment for the youth.

"We are living in a country where thousands of our able-bodied men are languishing on the streets without any aim due to bad economic policies", he noted.

Prof Mills said NDC would institute vibrant measures and programmes to restructure the nation's economy and that it would revive all defunct state-owned enterprises to help create jobs for the masses. He said Ghana, under his leadership, would develop progressively to benefit the people, adding that he had the expertise, experience and knowledge to help the nation achieve her development goals and therefore appealed to Ghanaians to vote massively for the NDC to enable it come back to power.

Mr Daniel Ohene-Agyekum, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, noted that the Party was poised to win the elections and urged supporters to bury their differences and unite in the interest all. He appealed to well meaning supporters of the party to step up their campaign at the grassroots to ensure that ordinary Ghanaians became conversant with the actual socio-economic problems confronting the nation.

The Regional Chairman said this would enable the citizenry to form their own opinion and make informed decisions during the 2008 elections, adding that the NPP had failed the nation.
