The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to Ghana’s constitutional two-term presidential limit, stating that it will not support any attempt to amend the constitution to allow a third presidential term.

Speaking in response to public discussions on the matter, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, said the party remains fully committed to the 1992 Constitution, which he noted the NDC played a key role in drafting.

He stressed that the two-term limit has been central to the stability of Ghana’s democracy since the inception of the Fourth Republic.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh on December 15, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah explained that the decision to cap the presidency at two terms was deliberate, aimed at preventing the abuse of executive power and safeguarding national stability.

His comments follow recent public debates triggered by remarks attributed to the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, regarding the possibility of a constitutional amendment that could allow President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term in office.

Asiedu Nketiah cautioned that any attempt to remove or weaken the presidential term limit would be dangerous and could create unnecessary tensions, undermine peace, and threaten the country’s democratic gains under the Fourth Republic.

He also dismissed claims that President Mahama intends to pursue a third term, describing such reports as unfounded.

According to him, President Mahama has consistently demonstrated respect for the constitution and Ghana’s democratic traditions.

The NDC Chairman urged the public to disregard rumours of a possible constitutional amendment, adding that the party’s focus remains on governance reforms, economic recovery, national unity, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
