Former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir Hammond (KT Hammond), has claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani, did not win the 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency on merit.
Speaking to the media following the dismissal of his election petition by the Obuasi High Court, KT Hammond attributed the NDC’s victory to voter apathy among supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The former MP, who lost the Adansi Asokwa seat to Dorgbadzi-Dorani by 954 votes in the December 7, 2024, polls, alleged that the election outcome was influenced by low turnout from NPP supporters.
“For whatever reason, we, the NPP, decided to hand over power, but that’s what we did, and so he didn’t win,” he stated, insisting that the NDC won the election “by default” and not on merit.

He further noted that, according to records, the NDC did not increase their votes compared to the NPP, which saw their votes drop significantly due to voter apathy.
“And for his own information, quite a few of the NDC supporters voted for me because of what they were telling me. But of course, a good percentage—the winning percentage—of NPP supporters stayed at home. They didn’t vote for him,” he added.
According to results declared by the Electoral Commission, Dorgbadzi-Dorani secured 14,229 votes, while Hammond polled 13,275.
However, KT Hammond stressed that the election was fraught with irregularities in the electoral process, particularly regarding pink sheets and ballot boxes.
The former MP, who represented Adansi Asokwa for 24 years, dismissed claims by Dorgbadzi-Dorani that his victory was a liberation for the constituency. KT Hammond urged the current MP to focus on his duties and avoid personal attacks while sounding a caution about his possible comeback for the seat.

“Tell him to stay away from this kind of loose talk or cheap talk, or whatever. He should stay away. I am not completely in retirement, you know,” he added.
KT Hammond’s election petition, filed on January 15, 2025, was dismissed by the Obuasi High Court on August 19, 2025, after he failed to appear in court on multiple occasions. The court imposed a GH¢60,000 fine, which Hammond declared his intent to appeal.
He indicated that he had asked his lawyers to withdraw the petition owing to challenges faced due to confusion over the Electoral Commission’s Gazette dates, which affected the 21-day filing period.
