NDC congratulates Muslims on Eid-ul-Fitr

Accra, Aug. 31, GNA - The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Wednesday congratulated the Muslim Community on the celebration of the Eid=96Ul-Fitr.

A statement issued by Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary of the NDC, said the celebration marked an important day in the lives of followers of Islam, as it marked the end of a month-long fast.

"We wish to indicate that although fasting is a very difficult period on the Muslim calendar, it constitutes a very important exercise as it prepares the faithful spiritually for an encounter with Allah," the NDC said.

"A month-long dedication and commitment to seek the face of Allah has been of immense benefit not only to Muslims but to Ghanaians and the world as whole," it added.

The NDC commended Muslims for their sacrifices to fast and pray, saying brought peace, stability and spiritual development of mankind. The previous NDC government instituted two national public holidays to mark the two important events on the Muslim calendar. The NDC said it was of the view that the existing harmony, peace and tolerance enjoyed among the major faiths in the country would be sustained and strengthened in the interest of the nation as it prepared for elections in 2012.

"The NDC will always abide by its commitment to the social and moral contract with Muslims worldwide, particularly Muslims in Ghana and, remains committed to deepening the existing cordial relationship," the statement said.

"The NDC as a party and the ruling government will not renege on its role and responsibility of promoting the interest of all faiths, including Islam and, continue in the effort of exploring potential areas of relevance to augment the cause of Islam in Ghana," it added.
