The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of taking a contradictory stance on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill after winning power.
He said the NDC strongly backed the bill while in opposition and used it as a political tool against the Akufo-Addo administration, but is now struggling with the same legislation.
Speaking on Accra-based TV3 on May 12, 2026, Afenyo-Markin claimed the NDC was more focused on winning elections than addressing the bill’s legal and governance implications.
“This whole LGBTQ+ issue, I think our friends in opposition were more interested in winning elections by blackmailing the Akufo-Addo government,” he stated.
“I knew that the NDC itself, upon coming into power, would have difficulty signing the bill, and I have been proven right,” he added.
“Our friends in the NDC have been caught by their own blackmail, and they will struggle a bit. The very thing they themselves wanted to push on our government, they cannot take it,” he said.
The Effutu MP questioned President John Mahama’s recent call for further consultations on the bill, saying it reflects a recognition of complexities that were ignored while in opposition.
“The President himself indicated that there must be further consultation. Why further consultation? What must be looked at again?” he asked.
Afenyo-Markin also criticised President Mahama’s suggestion that the bill is not a government priority, calling the shift politically inconsistent.
“He is a communication expert, so he knew what he was saying when he again said that ‘that is not his priority.’ But that is where many people think there is too much mischief.”
“You were in opposition and did not speak against the law in its shape and form, but now that you are in office, you have seen the reality,” he added.
