NDC Warns Govt Over ID Cards

The main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned that it will not be part of any future electoral process if national identity cards are issued by any institution other than the Electoral Commission.

The party’s National Youth Organiser, Haruna Iddrisu said the NDC is alarmed by the announcement of a government organ that it would issue ID cards to Ghanaians and explained that it would not only be an attempt to usurp the powers of the EC, but an illegality which the NDC would not condone.

''So if government has an intention of embarking on an ID card project, it is only worthy and useful that it must be done by the EC and no one else'', he said.

Haruna Iddrisu said the NDC would not recognise the ID cards project to be facilitated by the National Economic Dialogue Secretariat because it views it as an extension of the executive arm of government.

Mr Iddrisu urged government to as a matter of urgency, resource the EC adequately to discharge its obligations such as the production of a credible and reliable ID card stressing that ''it is not for nothing that the independence of the Electoral Commission is guaranteed under the constitution''.
