The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region on Thursday began vetting 110 aspirants for the Party’s parliamentary primaries.

The high number of aspirants makes the region the second highest after Northern Region, which reportedly has about 141 aspirants vying for 18 seats.

Out of the 110, two sitting Members of Parliament, Madam Helen Adjoa Ntoso, MP for Krachi West, also the Volta Regional Minister, and the MP for Ho Central, Mr Benjamin Kpodo, are going unopposed.

An aspirant from Krachi Nchumuru, Isaac Agyane, withdrew from the race at 11th hour, at the vetting.

A source close to the vetting committee told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that 95 aspirants filed nominations in the Region with 15 others filing from the Party’s headquarters in Accra for the 26 constituencies in the Region.

The two-day event is being conducted by selected Party Executives from the Constituency, Regional and National levels under the leadership of Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, a National Vice Chairman of the NDC.

The Anlo Constituency has the highest number of contestants with seven aspirants seeking to represent the Party in Parliament.

Mr Henry Ametefe, the Regional Organiser of the Party, told journalists that the vetting was not to exclude any aspirant but to prepare them for the contest.

“The policy is to look at each case on its merit,” he said. “We are not here to disenfranchise anyone and we encourage aspirants who do not make the mark to support those who win. It is a family affair. No one must go independent,” he stated.
