Reports on the vetting of President J. E. A. Mills and Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings for the July 10, 2011 congress to elect one of them for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearership slot at Sunyani, has been intercepted The Herald.
Both President Mills and Nana Konadu, who appeared before the Committee on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively were unanimously passed to stand for the election which is less than month away.
The Vetting Committee headed by Mr. Issifu Ali with Mr. Chris A – Ackumey as member/secretary, other members as Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Grant, Dr. Lionel Mobila and Mr. Cletus Avoka (MP).
Below is the details of a memo from the Vetting Committee on its way to the General Secretary, Mr. Johnson Asidu-Nketia of the NDC, which was intercepted by The Herald.
“NDC Presidential aspirants were vetted on Tuesday, 7th June and Wednesday 8th June, 2011 respectively.
“The two aspirants met the requirements of a presidential candidacy as stipulated under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana particularly Article 62 dealing with qualifications of a President, and also Article 44 of the National Democratic Congress Party’s Constitution.
“Candidate Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings was vetted on Tuesday 7th June 2011 and candidate President J.E.A. Mills on Wednesday 8th June, 2011.
“The two (2) aspirants were duly quizzed by the Committee on issues of Party membership, party discipline, contribution to the party, commitment, loyalty and unity of the party, among others.
“The aspirants assured the Committee, that they will accept the verdict of the delegates at the July, 2011 Congress irrespective of the verdict.
“The aspirants also assured the Committee that they will galvanise their supporters under the umbrella of the winning candidate to ensure massive party victory in the 2012 Presidential elections.
RECOMMENDATION
“In view of the foregoing, the Committee recommends as follows:
“The Committee upon the appraisal of the background and performance of the two aspirants under the prescribed guidelines, do hereby recommend the two aspirants duly qualified to contest the presidential slot of the National Democratic Congress Party at the forthcoming Congress scheduled for 8th – 9th July, 2011 at Sunyani.”
