NDC MP Slams His Government

The NDC Member of Parliament for Mfantsiman East, Hon. Kuntu Blankson, has blasted his party’s government over what he calls ridiculous expenditures made during the 2009 transfer of power from John Kufour to John Mills. He told citi news in an interview that the expenses made by the transition team show a clear violation of the President’s policy against profligate expenditure.

His comments came two days after Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffour released figures which show that the NDC government blew three billion old cedis on the 2009 transition process, which lasted for some two months. Over one billion old Ghana cedis was spent on food and other refreshments during the process. According to the Finance Ministry, more than ten million old Ghana cedis each was paid to every member of the Transition Team as sitting allowance.

Hon Kuntu Bankson told citi news the members of the Transition Team have no business paying themselves fat sitting allowances in clear breach of the President’s policy against profligacy. He cited the President’s refusal to take his per diem after his recent trip to London and felt the transition team could have sacrificed their allowances too to help the President’s quest to control expenditure.

Hon Kuntu Blankson said the recklessness with which state funds were expended by the Transition Team is strong evidence that the key people around the President are bent on seeing him fail. “If the followers of a leader go against the mission of the leader they have betrayed the leader.” He said. Hon. Blankson went on to caution the president to be careful in choosing people to work on his behalf as not everybody agrees with President Mills expenditure control.
