NDC Condemns Togolese President

The NDC spokesman on International Affairs, Kofi Attor has condemned the decision of Togolese President, Gnassingbe Eyadema to stand for another five-year term as a serious setback for the Peer Review Mechanism of the NEPAD Initiative.

In a statement issued in Accra, Mr Kofi Attor also expressed disappointment at President Kufuor who is the ECOWAS Chairman and has close relations with President Eyadema for failing to dissuade him from standing for re-election.

Mr Attor who is also MP for Ho Central said President Eyadema’s decision to stand for another term after 36 continuous years in office would have a negative impact on the wind of democratic change that has been blowing across the continent over the last decades.

He noted that President Eyadema who is currently the longest serving leader in Africa would have been in office for 41 continuous years if he achieves his ambition of being re-elected in the June Presidential poll in Togo.

The statement called on President Kufuor and other ECOWAS Leaders to exercise their influence on Eyadema to dissuade him from pursuing this ambition, as the present protests and demonstrations being reported from Togo could result in a humanitarian crisis that can affect Ghana in the form of refugees spilling across our common border.

Mr Attor recalled disturbances that occurred in Togo in the early 90s surrounding the same issue of Eyadema’s presidency and hoped that there will not be a recurrence to necessitate the re-opening of the Klikor Refugee camp.
