NADMO warns residents of flood prone areas

Accra, June 20, GNA - The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) on Saturday warned of heavy rains and advised persons living in flood prone areas, especially in the southern part of the country, to evacuate and relocate to higher grounds.

A statement signed by Mr James Owusu-Amoah, Chief Disaster Control Officer, said torrential rains currently being witnessed in parts of the country would continue and warned residents of Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi, Enchi and Cape Coast to relocate. "Currently, the ground is soggy and therefore any further rains may cause heavy runoffs that may lead to flooding," the statement warned. At least five persons have died in serious floods in Accra and several buildings and property were destroyed, following heavy rains Friday evening.

NADMO advised the public to call the following help lines in case of emergency; Headquarters Accra - 021772926; Greater Accra - 0244444350; Ashanti - 0244202878; Central - 028183539; and Western - 0244956548. Distressed persons can also call the National Fire Service on 192, or the Police on 191, the statement added.
