Brigadier General Francis Vib-Sanziri, the National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has called on people living near the banks of the black and white Volta Rivers to move to higher grounds.
He said this is important as the spillover from the Bagri Dam in the neighbouring Burkina Faso is intensifying.
Brigadier Gen. Vib-Sanziri said the spillover may cover about two miles from the banks of the rivers and residents within that zone may be affected adding that large farms near the dam in Burkina Faso have been destroyed and many residents in those parts displaced.
He said this at Zebilla, in the Bawku West District, when he and his team from the national NADMO headquarters visited the northern parts of the country.
Their visit included communities in the Upper East and Upper West Regions to assess the area and make recommendations for future disaster occurrences.
They visited flood prone areas including Nawuni and Kucobilla in the Northern Region and Sapeliga, Galaka and Timonde in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.
The team discussed with community members disaster management activities and called on those living too close to the river to relocate as the level of water flowing down would be very high and could destroy lives and property.
Mr Gavivina Tamakloe, Director for Relief and Reconstruction, NADMO, said the Organization was committed to aiding disaster victims but there was the need for people to safe guard their lives first.
The first spillover of the dam was done on August 20 and would continue until the water goes down to an acceptable level.
