NADMO calls for carnal between Keta Lagoon and the sea

Keta, July 12, GNA - Mr Kwame Abonie, Deputy National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), on Friday called for the creation of a carnal between the Keta Lagoon and the sea to ease flooding.

He said the carnal was the best option to offset more floods in the area as waters from the Klikpa and Todze rivers pour into the lagoon. Mr Abonie made the suggestion when he led a NADMO and Keta Municipal Assembly team to tour flooded areas in the municipality. The flood has so far destroyed about 50 houses, farms, properties and displaced 400 people at Agorbledokui, Blamazado, Trekume, Genui, Tregui and Sakome.

Other areas affected include Atorkor, Keta, Seva, Woe and Tegbi. Mr Henry Ametefee, Volta Regional NADMO Coordinator said there was the possibility that the outflows from the rivers in the hinterland would cause the lagoon to continue to overflow.

He assured the community that government would take actions that would mitigate their plight.

Mr Sylvester Tornyeava, Keta Municipal Chief Executive said the current floods had been the most damaging in the area for many years. 12 July 09
