Former NPP vice-presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka NAPO, has clarified the controversial remarks he made about Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, insisting that he never intended to diminish his legacy.
In a video sighted by MyNewsGh, NAPO said his comments were made during an NPP political event where he sought to distinguish between the political values associated with Nkrumah and those of the United Party tradition from which the NPP traces its roots.
“Even in Twi, I never said anything wrong against Nkrumah, if you want to be truthful,” he said.
According to him, the remarks were part of a broader political argument rather than a personal attack on the former president.
“It was an MPP political platform and I wanted to make a distinction between Kwame Nkrumah’s values and United Party values,” he explained.
NAPO compared the situation to football rivalries, arguing that supporting one side does not automatically mean disrespecting the other.
“If I’m a Manchester United fan and you support Chelsea, it doesn’t mean I’m attacking you because I support my team,” he said.
The former minister maintained that the controversy stemmed largely from how his remarks were interpreted after they were made public.
