Director of Communications, Ghana Water Company Limited, Stanley Martey has stated the devasting effect illegal mining popularly known as Galamsey is having on the production of clean water.

According to him, "the pictures are terrible…instead of clean water, we are seeing muddy water…they (illegal miners) stir the base of the water"

He recounted how the company has to spend a lot of time and money to get rid of mud stuck in the pumping machines.

"The pumps extract mud instead of water; so every four days or five we have to shut down, remove the mud change some parts and put them back. We do our best to treat but with that, we use a lot of chemicals which become very expensive" he told Kwami Sefa Kayi during an interaction on Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo'.
