Mr Brown-Gaisie urged them to seek the support of the assemblies and

the market women to establish fire volunteer groups and fire wardens at the markets to help reduce fire outbreaks there. Earlier in a welcoming address, the Eastern Regional Commander of the Service, Mr Bartholomew K. Nketia, said the region recorded 131 fire outbreaks between January and the end of October this year. He said the service conducted fire audit in 2,023 homes, processed fire certificates for 265 institutions with 300 institutions renewing their fire certificates for the year. Mr Nketia said with the support of the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) and the District Assemblies the Service had eight fire tenders and appealed for more fire tenders.

Earlier, the Acting Chief Fire Officer paid a courtesy call on the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, who called for effective anti-bushfire campaigns to help protect the rural economies. He said the annual bushfires more often destroyed all that the victims had acquired over the years for them to restart their lives, therefore, there was the need to implement methods to prevent bushfires if the rural economy of the country was to grow. 11 Dec. 10
