Mother of seven hit by stray bullet amid violent clash at Saamang

A mother of seven is fighting for her life after being struck by a stray bullet during a violent confrontation between military personnel and residents of Saamang, a community in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region on

The victim, identified as Janet Koh, a trader, was caught in the chaos as tensions flared between the youth and soldiers allegedly deployed to protect Kibi Goldfields Limited, a mining company accused by locals of operating within the buffer zone and main course of the River Akusu, a river considered sacred by the community, according to a report by citinewsroom.com.

Per reports, residents had earlier halted the company's mining activities along the riverbed. In response, military officers believed to have been called in by the company stormed the area and arrested two youth leaders associated with the protest.

The arrests triggered further agitation.

Angry youth reportedly attempted to block the road to prevent the security team from removing the detained individuals, prompting soldiers to fire multiple warning shots in an effort to disperse the crowd.

Janet Koh, who was selling roasted corn nearby, was struck in the right leg by a stray bullet as she tried to flee the scene.

She was rushed to the Saviour Memorial Hospital in Osiem, where she is currently in critical condition.

“We were only protecting our river. Now a woman is in the hospital, and our people have been arrested like criminals,” one resident said.

Others expressed frustration over what they described as the repeated targeting of community members whenever they raised concerns about mining activities along the Akusu River.

Meanwhile residents have called on the government and the Ghana Armed Forces to investigate the incident and ensure justice.
