Mornah Elected Into Ecowas Steering Committee On Political Parties

At the end of a 2-day regional meeting on political parties and internal democracy in ECOWAS member states held inHotel IVOTEL, Abidjan from 21-22 July 2010, Mr. Bernard Mornah of Ghana was elected into a 7-member Interim Steering Committee to Draft a Chapter on Political Parties in the sub-region. The Ghana delegation of Brigadier General Francis Agyemfra (IEA), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (NPP), and Bernard Mornah (PNC) was led by Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia of the NDC. The meeting also attracted experts from the sub-region who shared experiences on areas such as: roots of autocracy in party politics, lack of internal party democracy in member states, and peculiar challenges of democratizing party politics in West Africa.

The steering committee is made of Dr. Ahmed Mai Fatty of Gambia, Hon. Alomiza M. Ennos of Liberia, Alhaji Abubakari Bugaje of Nigeria, Mr. Coulibally S of Ivory Coast, Madame Adjamagbo –Johnson Brigitte Kafui of Togo, Mahamadou Sissoko of Mali, and Bernard Mornah of Ghana is expected to complete its work for ratification at another regional meeting by the close of 2010

In another development, the Ghanaian delegation was treated to a diner reception by H.E E.K.T. Donkor, Ghana’s Ambassador to Ivory Coast. Also the Ambassador organized the leadership of the Ghanaian Community in Ivory to meet with the three General Secretaries at the Embassy. The meeting dealt extensively on issues bordering on the Constitutional Review exercise that is currently underway.

The General Secretaries commended the Ghanaian community for the high level of discipline that they have shown by their organization.
