'Mom, Queen of Our Hearts': Nana Konadu's children pay emotional tribute to her

The children of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, have paid an emotional tribute to their mother, describing her as the ‘queen of their hearts’ whose legacy will continue to shape Ghana’s democracy and advance gender equality.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Kimathi Rawlings delivered the message at her state funeral on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Independence Square in Accra.

The family said Nana Konadu’s influence extended beyond her household, shaping the nation through her commitment to justice, women empowerment, and national pride.

“Mom, queen of our hearts, your legacy lives on through the lessons you taught us. We are consoled by the knowledge that your soul’s mission continues in a higher realm,” they said.

They noted that her life’s work has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s political and social landscape.

“Mum, you were never just advocating; you were doing. You will be remembered as a woman of action,” they indicated.

Highlighting her role as a partner to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, they recalled how he relied on her insight and strength.

“You were far more than a right hand. You were strategic, clear-minded and unwavering. You and dad were, in truth, one another’s partners,” they stated.

Reflecting on her role as a mother and grandmother, the children remembered her as a protector, confidant, and friend who was playful yet firm, generous yet principled.

They fondly spoke of her humour, storytelling, love for music and dancing, and the special attention she gave to each grandchild.

The children added that Nana Konadu lived her values without reservation, teaching them and countless Ghanaian women that inaction was never an option.

The state funeral brought together political leaders, diplomats, traditional authorities, and members of the public to honour the former First Lady, who was also the Founder of the National Democratic Congress’s 31st December Women’s Movement, as well as being a key figure in Ghana’s women’s movement.
