Mintah Akandoh details reforms to improve emergency care

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a series of reforms aimed at improving coordination and efficiency within the country’s emergency healthcare system.

Speaking to the media during a visit to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on March 21, 2026, he disclosed that a three-member committee was established to examine the system and recommend improvements.

He explained that the committee’s work, which has since been expanded, is nearing completion.

According to the minister, the government is taking time to ensure that the recommendations lead to lasting change rather than short-term fixes.

Mintah Akandoh said one of the key issues identified by the committee is the lack of proper coordination across health facilities.

To address this, the ministry is developing an IT-powered command centre designed to streamline emergency response. The system will connect ambulance services with hospitals, enabling patients to be directed to the appropriate facility in real time.

Mintah Akandoh further indicated that a dedicated emergency stabilisation centre is being developed to serve as an initial point of care where patients are stabilised before being transferred to other specialised hospitals.

“We are going to pilot with the regional and the teaching hospitals. So when even the ambulance people pick you up and then they put you in the system, they direct you where to go. So it's something we are establishing; they are doing the procurement, and they are placing barcodes on all the beds. So even when I stay in my office, I know the number of beds I've called. When there is an emergency and the person is on the bed for more than 24 hours," he stated.

His visit follows a a viral video purportedly showing patients of the hospital lying on the bare floor of the facility due to the availability of beds.
