Minority legal team opposes proposed removal of Chief Justice by NPP

Legal Counsel for the Minority Caucus and Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has stated that he will oppose any attempt by a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to remove the Chief Justice appointed under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

Speaking on Adom FM on September 3, 2025, John Darko, expressed the view that the judiciary, as an arm of government and an institution, must be adequately protected from political interference.

Entire Supreme Court justices will be sacked in 2029 – Former MP

“I’ve heard people saying that the next NPP government should take steps to remove the Chief Justice who would be appointed by President Mahama. My advice to them is that we shouldn’t think or behave that way. I’m saying for certain that if the NPP assumes power in 2029, and it attempts to remove the sitting Chief Justice, I will speak against it and oppose it.

“This is not something I would want to support. Generally, we will look at each case on its own but my position is that the institution must be protected. The dignity of the office must be protected,” he said.

His comments served as a response and caution to claims by some individuals predicting that a future NPP government would take similar action to remove any Chief Justice appointed under the current ruling administration.

Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was removed from office by the president on Monday, September 1, 2025.
