Minority Calls On Gov't To Reduce Fuel prices

The minority in Parliament says it will table a motion when the House resumes sitting tomorrow (Tuesday December 11) calling on the government to reduce prices of petroleum products in line with current world prices of crude oil.

Minority Chief Whip and M.P for Avenor, Mr. Doe Adjaho, announced this on Saturday at the fifth Volta Regional Bi-annual Conference of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The minority said between February and March, this year the government increased prices of fuel at the time the commodity was selling at 28 dollars on the world market.

According to them, there was no justification for fuel to continue to sell at the current prices, when the world prices of crude oil had dropped to 18 dollars a barrel.

Mr. Adjaho, therefore, questioned what would happen to Ghanaians if the world price of the commodity should shoot up again. Mr. Adjaho said the minority would not be a party to any reconciliation Bill, which is not genuine, because it is the opinion of the vast majority of the people that the bill must start from independence to date.

He cited organisations such as the Catholic Bishops Conference, National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), which were all calling for the reconciliation to start from 1957 to today.

On the restructuring of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) by government, he said it was created under an act of Parliament and could not be changed by cabinet decision.

He said workers of National Mobilisation Programme (NMC), who were duly employed are being sacked and paid two months salary, only to be replaced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters.

The NDC minority led by its spokesman on Energy, Hon. Abraham Kofi Asante has consistently requested government to reduce fuel prices since the price at the world market has gone down.

Mr. Modestus Ahiable, M.P. for Ketu North, was elected unopposed as the Volta Regional Chairman, with Mr. J. R. Dabo and Mr. T.R.K. Yaokuma-Adanu as his two Vice chairmem.

Mr. Francis K. Ganyaglo was elected Regional Secretary with Mr. Alfred Deletsu as his deputy while Mr. Steve Akoli, M.P for Ho-East was retained as the Treasurer.

Mr. Michael Gamor, was also elected Regional Organiser, with Madam Evelyn Goni as his deputy while, Mr. Nicholas Fiato took the post of Propaganda Secretary and Hajia Hawa Hamidu as his deputy.
