Ministry of Transport says it does not intend to disband MTTU

Accra, March 10, GNA - The Ministry of Transport on Tuesday said the concept of the establishment of a dedicated traffic police would be a collaborative effort between the Ministries of Interior and Transport.

A press release signed by Public Affairs Manager of the Ministry of Transport, Mr Kweku Sersah-Johnson, said it was not the ministry's intention to disband the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU).

The statement explained that the idea was for the establishment of a dedicated Traffic Police in future as a specialist force to focus solely on the enforcement of motor traffic rules and regulations and check general indiscipline on Ghana roads.

"The concept has been on the drawing board for about a decade now and that it would have to go through cabinet and appropriate legislative approvals before implementation," it said.
