Ministry donates microscopes to University of Ghana

Accra, Feb. 22 GNA - The Ministry of Education and Sports on Wednesday presented 75 microscopes valued at 110,000 Euros to the Faculty of Science of the University of Ghana in Accra. The state-of the-art equipment is to replace the obsolete ones and facilitate teaching and research at the Department.

Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, who made the presentation on behalf of Ms Elizabeth Ohene, Minister of State in-Charge of Tertiary Education, said the Faculty was allocated nine billion cedis as its budgetary provision for the year. He said the first portion of the amount which was 4.5 billion cedis had been used to purchase new science equipment including the microscopes.

Professor Tagoe appealed to the Government to channel more resources into science education to help in the development of the country.

Professor George T. Odamtten, Dean of the Faculty of Science, who received the items, thanked the Ministry for responding quickly to their urgent message for equipment. He said the Faculty of Science had suffered from perennial shortages of microscopes that had affected academic work.
