"Ministers, MPs to lead anti-demo"

The Ghanaian Voice, 10 May 1995

Ministers of State in the Rawlings govt and NDC members of Parliament are expected to lead a group of thugs of the ruling NDC party in a counter demonstration tomorrow in an attempt to disrupt the "Kume Preko" demo of the Alliance for Change.

This follows an agreement reached between Mr E.T. Mensah, Minister of Youth & Sports, and members of the NDC regional secretariat at a meeting on Monday at their regional office in Accra.

According to a source close to the regional office, Mr E T Mensah had gone to the meeting asking for thugs to take part in their counter demonstration.

The source further said the regional executive told Mr E T Mensah that they would only do his bidding if they the Ministers would lead the demo and if they would pay them for the operation.

"We cannot every time sacrifice our lives for you Ministers to enjoy. You take part, pay us and we are ready", a party member was reported to have told Mr Mensah.

According to our source the conditions set by the regional executive had been accepted and the govt Ministers and MPs are expected to be at the head of the thugs in their planned anti-Kume Preko demo.

In a related development the organisers of the "kume Preko" march, in a release issued yesterday, has invited all Ghanaians to participate in the historic event "which is intended to contribute to the efforts being made to resolve the very urgent social and economic problems facing our country today".
